Opinion: Research, Publication and Review Work during the SARS-COV-2’s Pandemic

In December 2019, it began the world wide spread of a new Coronavirus, Sars-Cov-2, which causes Covid-19 disease. Coronaviruses are RNA viruses that cause respiratory syndromes in animals, such as birds and mammals, being that seven of which are known as pathological agents in humans [1].

This new Coronavirus was first detected in the city of Wuhan, China [2]. In a short period of time, at the end of January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the presence of this new Coronavirus in several other countries, declaring the epidemic as an international emergency [3]. In Brazil, in February 2020, there were already suspected cases, under investigation, but without confirmed case record [4].

Currently, just over a year after the beginning of the pandemic, there are 121,969,223 confirmed cases worldwide, with 2,694,094 deaths [5]. In Brazil, to date (March 2021), 11,871,390 cases and 290,314 deaths from the new Coronavirus have been confirmed since the beginning of the pandemic [6].

Since the beginning of this pandemic, caused by this new Coronavirus, we have encountered many difficulties in our day-to-day lives. The concern with the possible illness and even death caused by Sars-Cov-2 caused everyone to take precautionary measures, changing the lives of the world population in an extreme way, making the year 2020 unforgettable, in a bad way, for all of humanity.

In Brazil, and in the world, many researchers have been stopped or even discontinued, due to the safety of researchers, students and everyone involved. With the passing of the year (2020), many researches managed to be resumed, in addition to new ones being done (in relation to the new Coronavirus), giving a new impetus to publications that had been reduced during this period. The changes suffered in the scientific community were noticeable due to the situation experienced in the midst of the pandemic.

With the research on the new Coronavirus being carried out and works of great importance being published, one can be sure about the enormous need for the existence of the scientific community, of renowned and rising researchers, of new researchers, of post-graduate and graduation students, with crucial roles in the development of science.

Science has shown itself, more than ever, to be important to humanity, in order to show ways that can lead us to a future cure of this terrible disease that plagues us. Therefore, the development of vaccines against this virus is extremely important, to help us combat the spread of the disease and the growing number of deaths that occur every day. To date (March 2021), 97,607,823 (1.25%) people have been fully vaccinated (two doses) and 251,835,160 (3.23%) people have taken the first dose of the vaccine worldwide. In Brazil, we have 3,365,497 (1.59%) people fully vaccinated (two doses) and 9,970,231 (4.72%) people who took the first dose of the vaccine [7].

In addition, we cannot fail to talk about the “heroes” of health, tireless workers in the fight against Covid-19. Health professionals, who daily do their utmost to save as many lives as possible and treat patients as best as possible, should be honored by all, because without them, our fight against this terrible disease would be lost.

So, I express here my immense gratitude to all health professionals and to all scientists and researchers who somehow contribute to the treatment and possible cure of this disease.
